Objectives

1.1 Overview

TCAD Sentaurus users need a text editor to create command files for the simulation tools. Any text editor (such as GNU Emacs, NEdit, and gedit) can be used for this purpose. TCAD Sentaurus is shipped with a basic text editor called SEdit, which offers no TCAD tool–specific features.

In this module, you are introduced to the open-source text editor jEdit, which is extremely powerful and flexible, and very easy to use. Its most remarkable feature is that it can be customized easily to provide syntax highlighting and tool-specific macro support.

Synopsys has created a TCAD Sentaurus customization package for jEdit. This customization package enables jEdit to provide syntax highlighting, abbreviation support, and command insertion using a graphical user interface for Sentaurus Process, Sentaurus Structure Editor, Sentaurus Device, Inspect, Sentaurus Interconnect, and EMW.

1.2 Downloading Sentaurus Customizations

Sentaurus customizations for jEdit are distributed separately from regular Sentaurus releases. The customization package is distributed as an application note available from SolvNet®.

To download the customization package, go to:

From this Web page, you can download the latest version of the customization package jedit-sentaurus-customization.tar. Detailed instructions for downloading the file using HTTP and FTP are available on the same Web page.

1.3 Downloading jEdit

jEdit is a Java-based text editor that is available on any operating system that supports Java. Furthermore, various plug-ins are available to extend and customize the features of jEdit. For more details, visit http://www.jedit.org.

Synopsys does not distribute jEdit itself or the Java Runtime Environment. Both packages are available as free downloads for virtually all computer systems. jEdit is released as free software with full source code, provided under the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2.

The SolvNet application note mentioned in Section 1.2 Downloading Sentaurus Customizations has instructions on how to download and install Java and jEdit.

1.4 Installing Sentaurus Customizations

Sentaurus customizations for jEdit must be installed for each end user separately. After downloading the customization package jedit-sentaurus-customization.tar, copy it to your home directory and type the following command before starting jEdit:

tar xvf jedit-sentaurus-customization.tar

Detailed installation instructions also are available from the SolvNet application note mentioned in Section 1.2 Downloading Sentaurus Customizations.

1.5 Using jEdit as the Text Editor in Sentaurus Workbench
